IPMB director Tuan-hua Ho elected president of the American Society of Plant Biologists (6-19-2008)
Tuan-hua David Ho, current director of IPMB and Academician of Academia Sinica has been elected to the presidency of the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) in the society¡¦s election conducted this spring. In honor of this historic event, and the selection of Professor C.Y. Lin of National Taiwan University as a corresponding member of ASPB, a reception was held on June 10th at IPMB to congratulation both Dr. Lin and Dr. Ho on these latest achievements and to recognize their long and continuing contributions to plant science in Taiwan and the world. | Variation in rDNA loci producing 45S ribosomal RNA (45S rRNA) in Oryza species (7-18-2008) |
| Variations in the number and the position of rDNA loci among species can provide valuable information of evolution and genome organization at the chromosomal level. Mei-Chu Chung¡¦s group has reported polymorphisms in the number of rDNA loci and in their chromosomal positions among Oryza species by using fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) (Theor Appl Genet 116:745¡V753, 2008). They thus provided cytological evidence to support the hypothesis that chromosomal inversion as well as amplification and transposition of rDNA can occur during Oryza species evolution. ... Secret of the Agrobacterium Secretome: (07-07-2008)
Type VI Protein Secretion System in a plant pathogenic bacterium |
| Erh-Min Lai¡¦s laboratory has been interested in employing cutting-edge proteomics tools to understand the global molecular events that occur between microbes and their hosts. A shotgun proteomics approach was performed to investigate the secretome of Agrobacterium tumefaciens, a plant pathogenic bacterium uniquely adapted for conducting plant transformation by horizontal transmission of DNA. They identified 12 proteins including one known (VirB1*) and 11 new potential secretory proteins (Wu et al., 2008, Journal of Bacteriology 190:2841-2850). Interestingly, one unknown protein, named hemolysin-coregulated protein (Hcp), is predicted to be a soluble protein without a recognizable N-terminal signal peptide. ... Read more |

A life-long achievement honor (05-26-2008) |
In May 2008, Academician Chu-Yun Lin, Professor Emeritus at National Taiwan University and also a current member of the IPMB Advisory Committee, was given the honor of permanent Corresponding Membership by the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB), the largest plant biology society in the world. The society makes the award to outstanding plant researchers who live outside the United States, with the stipulation that the total number of corresponding members cannot be more than 2% of the total society membership.... Prestigious Young Investigator Award(5-15-2008) |
I am extremely pleased to inform you that Dr. Shu-Hsing Wu has been awarded the Academia Sinica Young Investigator Award. This is a prestigious award for the most |
promising young scientists in Taiwan (not just for PIs in AS), and Shu-Hsing is the first person from IPMB getting this recognition. Please join me in congratulating Shu-Hsing for receiving this honor. --Tuan-hua |
