" The 2007 Great French-Taiwanese Scientific Prize goes to Dr.Yue-ie Hsing and Professor Michel Delseny" (12-15-2007)

Great French-Taiwanese Scientific Prize is a prize supported byl, Taiwan and French Academy Institute, France. Starting from 1999, a specific research area is chosen each year and two scientists in that area of expertise selected to honor their distinguished achievements in promoting scientific collaboration, mutual exchange and young scholar training. The winners this year are Dr. Yue-ie Hsing, Institute of Plant and Microbial Biology, Academia Sinica and Professor Michel Delseny, University of Perpingnan/CNRS, France

Prof. Delseny and Dr. Hsing started their long-term friendship 20 years ago. They got acquainted with each other because they both worked on seed science research. They then accelerated the rice sequencing project and rice functional genomics research in both countries, promoted the exchange of young scientists/scholars between two countries, organized bilateral meetings, and so on. Together, they published more than 30 papers in high-level journals. Their efforts also serve as an important foundation for building an extensive scientific network that fosters more collaborative and training effort among other scientists.

The major scientific accomplishment resulting from collaborations between Prof. Delseny and Dr. Hsing are in rice genomics and functional genomics. The tight links between Genoscope in France and ASPGC (Academia Sinica Plant Genome Center) in Academia Sinica were a significant part of the International Rice Genome Sequencing Project which led to the complete genome sequencing of the first crop plant. This was a laudable effort in catapulting plant and agricultural sciences in both France and Taiwan to the forefront of modern genomics.

This breakthrough also opened the door for the follow-up projects with even higher impact: 1) genome annotation effort for discoveries of novel genes, and 2) functional genomics studies of gene functions. Indeed, rice T-DNA insertion mutant populations were generated in both France and Taiwan, and these projects have fostered more collaborations locally as well as between two countries.

Another intriguing accomplishment between Prof. Delseny and Dr. Hsing was the analysis of a group of unique seed Late Embryogenesis Abundant (LEA) proteins.? These LEA proteins are present in large quantities in seeds and they appear to be key in desiccation tolerance in seeds. They have analyzed the structure and potential functions of many of these LEA proteins and their genes, and published 23 papers on this field.

Many workshops/symposia on plant research have been organized by them and were held in both countries with the purpose of training and fostering more collaboration.? These activities, together with frequent visits to each other’s lab, have allowed young scientists to be exposed to refreshing and stimulating research environment and get acquainted with fellow scientists sharing research results and ideas.

Training of young scientists has been a key activity in this France/Taiwan collaborative effort. A good number of young scientists have benefited from these programs – they received training, published many high-level papers and became independent scientists.

verall, Prof. Delseny and Dr. Hsing have contributed significantly to the change of landscape in plant sciences in both France and Taiwan through their collaborative research and training efforts. Their influence has changed the research communities in their field of expertise in both countries, becoming more interactive and collaborative.

PictureNovember 15, 2006 - Dr. WU, Shu-Hsing has been recognized by the Thomson Citation Laureate Award. Her Plant Journal paper on Arabidopsis senescence has been one the eight most cited papers published by Taiwanese scientists in recent years. This is indeed a wonderful news for Shu as well as for IPMB.

Thomson Scientific announced it has honoured eight leading professors with the first ‘Thomson Citation Laureate Award’ presented in Taiwan. This accolade is awarded to top Taiwanese research professors in recognition of their pioneering achievements and influential contribution to international research and development (R&D).

The prestigious Thomson Citation Laureate Award is presented based on the number of citations that an academic research paper has, reflecting its impact and influence on a given subject and the importance attributed to it by subsequent research.

Dr. Na-Sheng Lin October 13, 2006  Dr. Na-Sheng Lin has been named Distinguished Research Fellow in recognition of her achievements in the laboratory, classroom and community. The designation, recommended by the Advisory Committee of IPMB, was approved by the Academia Sinica on October 13, 2006. The title of Distinguished Research Fellows, is among the highest honors that can be bestowed on a faculty member by the Academia Sinica. Those selected for the title have been recognized nationally and usually internationally for the importance of their research.

Lin, a Deputy Director at IPMB, was recruited three weeks ago by Academia Sinica as Interim Director of the Agricultural Biotechnology Research Center (ABRC).

"IPMB has been very supportive of my work, in particular by providing me with an environment where basic research is highly valued and rewarded," Lin says. "I am delighted to receive such fellowship. It's a great honor and one that I didn't expect. I am deeply grateful to those who participated in the nomination and selection processes."

Despite, her research and the award, Lin doesn't try to take all the credit. "A lot of the reasons why I'm getting this award is because of the outstanding colleagues, associates and graduate students I've worked with," she said.

IPMB colleagues threw a reception honoring Lin on October 13, at 4 pm right after the regular Friday Seminar.

Dr. Na-Sheng Lin April 15, 2003 - Dr. Na-Sheng Lin one of our molecular biologists, was honored with Award for Biology, Medical and Agricultural Sciences of the 46th Academic Awards of the Ministry of Education (教育部學術獎) in recognition of her prestigious contributions on molecular biology of bamboo virus.

During the ceremony Minster of Education JT Huang praised the recipients and emphasized the value of the awards.
"... By this award we hope to cultivate prestigious leaderships in education and research circles."

... Speaking on behalf of all the recipients, Lin said that the most uplifting part of research work is the fact that one can be satisfied both in spirit and in wisdom. She also encouraged young people to follow this path.

"... Winning this award is not the end of our academic achievement, but a new beginning," Lin said.

To date, Lin was the 5th recipient of our Institute for such award in last 40 years. Chou-Shong Huang (1977), Wei-Chin Chang (1980), Chang-Hung Chou (1983) and Hong-Pang Wu (1985) of our Institute were among the previous recipients of the Awards.
