Tuan-hua David Ho, current director of IPMB and Academician of Academia Sinica has been elected to the presidency of the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB) in the society’s election conducted this spring. In honor of this historic event, and the selection of Professor C.Y. ASPB is one of the most prominent professional societies for plant biologists and has approximately 5000 members from around the world. ASPB also publishes two of the top three plant science journals and performs numerous outreach and lobbying events to promote plant research. Presidency of the ASPB has been occupied by a long list of distinguished plant scientists since the society’s founding in 1924 and is one of the most internationally prominent positions in plant science. Nominations for the ASPB presidency are screened by a nominating committee and the top two candidates voted on by the ASPB membership at large. Based on his election this spring, Director Ho will serve as the ASPB President Elect in 2008-2009, ASPB President in 2009-2010, and Immediate Past President in 2010-2011.
Dr. Ho is also a professor of biology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, USA and holds several adjunct appointments and advisory board positions at universities and research institutes in Taiwan. |

A life-long achievement honor (05-26-2008)
 |
In May 2008, Academician Chu-Yun Lin, Professor Emeritus at National Taiwan University and also a current member of the IPMB Advisory Committee, was given the honor of permanent Corresponding Membership by the American Society of Plant Biologists (ASPB), the largest plant biology society in the world. The society makes the award to outstanding plant researchers who live outside the United States, with the stipulation that the total number of corresponding members cannot be more than 2% of the total society membership. Academician Lin is recognized for his life-long contributions to plant biology discoveries and education. For half a century, Professor Lin has made seminal breakthroughs in research into plant hormones and stress-related proteins and devoted much effort to educating numerous young Taiwanese plant scientists. Some of these scientists have become leaders in plant biology throughout the world as well as in Taiwan. Academician Lin is the only scientist in Taiwan to have received the distinguish award. |
