        稻屬(Oryza) 中約有24 個物種,其中有兩個是栽培稻,其餘為野生稻。利用遠緣雜交及後續回交多次可以將野生稻的抗病蟲害和抗逆境等重要的農藝性狀導入栽培品種,但是育種成效往往受限於雜交後代的低稔性甚至於不稔性。在稻屬內,各物種的染色體數目和染色體結構都相當保守,但rDNA-FISH的結果顯示45SrDNA基因座的數目和分佈在物種間頗有差異。因此推論在演化過程中,某些rDNA基因座曾發生大規模的基因擴增或刪除,甚至基因座移位或其所在的染色體片段發生反轉。此外,在兩個遠緣且基因組大小懸殊的二倍體野生稻Oryza australiensis (EE) 和O. brachyantha (FF) 的45S rDNA之基因間非轉錄區(IGS) 之序列和編組與稻屬內其他物種迥異,顯然經歷不同的演化途徑。利用基因組原位雜合技術(genomic in situhybridization, GISH) 標記來自不同水稻物種的染色體,發現種間雜交後代的來自不同物種的染色體在花粉母細胞減數分裂時鮮少配對,多數染色體為單價體形式,偶爾可見異源配對或同源配對所形成的二價體或多價體。減數分裂所產生的配子體所包含的染色體數目和組成極為不均,說明水稻遠緣種間雜交F1高度不稔的原由。遠緣雜交種在減數分裂時染色體的配對行為可說明來自兩親的染色體是否有聯會、互換、發生基因組重組的機會。觀察水稻遠緣種間雜交F1之減數分裂時近同源染色體間的配對行為並探討水稻物種間的雜交親和性,為育種工作重要的參考資訊,藉此也可以瞭解物種間基因組的編組和結構差異,亦可探討稻屬物種之基因組多樣性和演化親緣關係。
