Na-sheng Lin has assumed the post of interim director of IPMB effective September 1. She succeeds Tuan-hua Ho who will remain at IPMB as a distinguished research fellow. We thank outgoing Dr. Ho for his service to IPMB over the past years and welcome Dr. Lin to her new postion. |

| Aspirins and carbohydrates promote direct somatic embryogenesis in orchid leaf culture (8-19-2008) |

| Small amounts of salicylic acid are known to be present in plants. Originally salicylic acid was extracted from the willow bark to make the well known pain relief medication Aspirin. Salicylic acid is thought to promote disease resistance, increase flower life, inhibit seed germination, and promote ethylene synthesis. Wei-chin Chang¡¦s team found that small amount of exogenous salicylic acids highly enhances somatic embryo formation directly from cultured pieces of orchid Oncidium leaf (Hong PI, JT Chen, WC Chang, Effects of salicylic and acetylsalicylic acid on direct somatic embryogenesis of Oncidium, J. Plant Biochem Biotech, in press). The response is pretty sensitive - too much aspirin will kill the leaf pieces - putting a quarter of a tablet in about half a liter of water should work. Another report attempts to modify carbon sources of media for promoting embryogenesis in two cultivars of Oncidium, and has been accepted by Biologia Plantarum (Hong PI, JT Chen, WC Chang, Promotion of direct somatic embryogenesis of Oncidium by adjusting carbon sources). |

| Variations in the number and the position of rDNA loci among species can provide valuable information of evolution and genome organization at the chromosomal level. Mei-Chu Chung¡¦s group has reported polymorphisms in the number of rDNA loci and in their chromosomal positions among Oryza species by using fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) (Theor Appl Genet 116:745¡V753, 2008). They thus provided cytological evidence to support the hypothesis that chromosomal inversion as well as amplification and transposition of rDNA can occur during Oryza species evolution. ... Oh, our residential tree hugger, TH Chen, stirred a big brouhaha again. The impact of his strike was so strong on shaking big wigs¡¦ glass windows with his complaints on the priority of landscape policy at Sinica national park. What our residential avid arborist sincerely want is to protect the trees around. Every trees that he and his colleagues desire to hug after 20 or 30 years, remembering the cherished moments they had together in the campus. Sinica people should not forget to turn on their heart and brain while making far-reaching decisions on saving the campus green trees and the antique edifices.
