Adventures in ABA  (10-24-2007)
Image Image
Image
Abscisic acid (ABA) accumulates in plants exposed to stresses that cause dehydration of plant tissue. ABA is then a key regulator of plant responses to abiotic stress. The metabolic mechanisms controlling the amount of ABA present in the plant as well as the identity of the receptors that can perceive the increased levels of ABA remain as major unresolved questions in plant biology. Paul Verslues has recently reviewed some new developments ABA research (Current Opinion in Plant Biology online).  ... Read more

ImageOne more review from We-chin Chang's team, Zygotic and somatic embryogenesis of Phalaenopsis (by JTChen, WP Gow, WC Chang), will be published in the coming December issue of Orchid Science and Biotechnology, a new plant science journal of Global Science Books. They explain their protocols to achieve either repetitive embryogenesis or direct somatic embryo formation plus subsequent secondary embryogenesis from protocorms and leaf explants of 4 cultivars...  Read more

The Sunflower: On the Possibilities and Limits of Forgiveness  by Simon Wiesenthal, 1998, Schocken 304p, ISBN-10: 0805210601 Image
It's not a gardening guide on sunflower, but truly a heavy stuff on humanity.
Simon Weisenthal recalls his demoralizing life in a concentration camp and his envy of the dead Germans who have sunflowers marking their graves. At the time he assumed his grave would be a mass one, unmarked and forgotten. ... Read more
